Housebuilders are resorting to renting out properties they are unable to sell due to the problems in the housing market. The Bank of England has said that builders are trying to improve their cashflow by letting out completed properties that would not sell in the current conditions. It added that they were also offering shared equity schemes to prospective buyers and increasing sales to housing associations. Work has ceased on many uncompleted properties, which have been shelved in the absence of confirmed buyers, its latest summary of business conditions report said. Unsurprisingly, the volume of housebuilding has continued to contract, and new housing starts are at very low levels. Construction companies have been hit hard by the problems in the housing and mortgage markets, with the sector shedding thousands of jobs in recent months.
